Overview

The Harken® CLR™ mooring winch is a flush-stowing, deck-mounted powered winch for both sail and power yachts featuring geometry and mechanical characteristics never before seen. No other retracting, flush-mounted winch has offered the power-for-size ratio offered by the CLR. It stows completely belowdeck and occupies 40% less horizontal and less than 50% of the vertical space required by the previous market leaders. The CLR weighs just 33% of its competition while delivering comparable mechanical advantage. This compact form makes it possible for yachts to mount two CLR winches at the stern quarters and one in the bow. Together, three CLRs can reduce the need for engine and thruster power while helping crews moor stern-to-dock. The CLR employs unprecedented winch drum geometry. Five aluminum columns rotate together around a center axis. Working together, they create a very light drum that provides substantially more line-holding power and low-speed torque than would be available using a traditional drum. The CLR offers internal LED lights at the bottom of each column for use in low-light mooring situations. 600 kg (1322.8 lb) max holding load for boats from 13.7 m -18.2 m (44.9′ -…

FAQs

Who should install this winch?

Installation and maintenance information is intended exclusively for qualified operators; non-expert installation may cause serious damage.

What deck requirements are stated for installation?

Install on a flat deck area, reinforced if necessary, to bear a load at least twice the winch’s maximum working load.

Are installation bolts included, and what type are they?

Yes. The manual states CLR winches are equipped with M8x90 A4 stainless steel screws and deck washers.

Does winch orientation matter during installation?

Yes. Orientation must consider the outline dimensions, and there is only one orientation available for coupling the assembly support with the motor.

Should the columns support be removed during installation?

No. Keep the columns support in the position found when opening the packaging; remove it only when indicated.

What is the intended use of the CLR mooring winch?

It is designed and manufactured to moor the sailing boats and the motor boats on which it is installed.

What happens if I exceed the maximum loads?

Loads above MWL or MHL can cause the winch to fail or pull off the deck suddenly, creating severe injury or death risk.

What are the CLR 600 electric motor performance figures (12V)?

For CLR 600 electric horizontal motor: 12 V (700 W). Line speed is 24 m/min with no load; current absorption is 160 A measured at MWL.

How is the listed line speed measured?

The manual notes that line speed is measured with no load.

Any corrosion/isolation guidance for mounting?

Mounting bolts must be isolated with anti-corrosive lubricants. Prevent direct contact between aluminium plates and conductive materials (e.g., carbon fiber); fiberglass lamination is required in that case.

Do I need to read the manual before using the winch?

Yes. The manual must be read and fully understood before using the system to avoid injury or property damage.

Can the winch be used to divert a line (cross-sheeting)?

No. The manual specifically says not to use the winch to divert a line (cross-sheeting).

Should I check below-deck space before drilling?

Yes. Check the space available below deck for the gearmotor assembly before drilling the deck.

Any safety warning about hands and feet near the winch?

Yes. Do not put fingers, hands, or feet near the winch during operation.

Is CLR 600 offered in both electric and hydraulic versions?

Yes. The manual lists CLR Mooring Winch 600 as available in electric and hydraulic versions (EL/HY).
